We Couldn’t Do It Without You
Thank you for your interest in connecting with others as a volunteer at Walk MS.
The success of Walk MS is directly related to the wonderful volunteers who help
make the event a great experience. We welcome volunteers with a wide range of
skills, talents, abilities and interests. Families, corporate groups, and individuals
are welcome to participate.
Your donation of time is greatly appreciated and needed to create successful events. From pre-event planning to day-of implementation, it takes hundreds of volunteers to make Walk MS successful.
The only requirement we have of you is a sincere desire to help us end MS forever.
Below are examples of some of the available volunteer positions.
Want to do more than just help out on the day of the event? Have ideas and connections that can help make the walk MS experience more meaningful for participants? Then we need you to join our planning committee! Each walk site has a group of volunteers who help plan all the details leading up to the big day and meetings are typically held monthly on days and at times that works for the entire group. Once you sign up for the planning committee you'll be put in contact with the site coordinator who will invite you to the groups next meeting.
Volunteers are needed to help spread the word about walk MS within their community by distributing rack cards, posters, fliers, etc. to local businesses. Pick up marketing materials from the NMSS office and personally visit stores, churches, libraries, post offices, restaurants, schools and other public places and ask if they are willing to display our materials. Must enjoy dealing with people and have adequate transportation for distribution.
Provide a clearly marked route for participants to follow. Mark walking route with walk MS arrows prior to the event, as well as any additional signage needed along the route. All walk MS arrows and additional signage will be provided by walk MS coordinator. At conclusion of event, remove all signage. Must be able to read a map, follow directions, and have access to transportation or ability to walk entire route with signage.
Check-In / Registration:
Check-in pre-registered participants or help register any new participants to the walk on the day of the event. Collect registration envelopes from all walk participants while ensuring that all information on envelope is completely filled out. Must enjoy dealing with people, attend a registration training meeting prior to the walk, ability to follow established check-in procedures and able to remain seat in one spot for a few hours.
Serve up some yummy refreshments at the conclusion of the walk event. Must enjoy dealing with people and use proper hygienic procedures when handling food or beverages.
Support Vehicle Driver:
Provide transportation and encouragement as needed to participants along the route. Drive route with proper "WALK MS SUPPORT VEHICLE" signage displayed on vehicle. Transport participants to rest stop or back to start/finish location if they need assistance or have difficulty walking. Must have a valid driver's license, a larger vehicle for transportation (cars donated for select sites) and a DMV check (no cost to volunteer). Must be able to commit to a full day as a Support Vehicle Driver and be ready to go by walk start time.
Rest Stop Support:
Keep the walk participants refreshed and hydrated by providing some food and beverages at the halfway point along the route. Set up rest stop materials as needed and decorate in MS orange fashion! Will also be responsible for cleaning up the rest stop area at conclusion of the event. Must enjoy dealing with people and have the ability to lift various objects or boxes of different sizes and weights. Must be able to stay outside in all types of weather, if rest stop area is outside (each site varies).
Finish Line Celebration:
Let's party! This is the time for celebration! Finish Line volunteers will cheer walkers across the finish line and celebrate with walkers as they return! Thank the walkers for walking with us and direct them to the lunch area for light refreshments. Must have an out-going personality, enjoy dealing with people and ability to stand and/or sit outside (each sites finish varies) for a couple of hours.
Are you trained or have a background in medical support? Help us provide medical support to participants during the walk MS event. Must have training or background in medical support and the ability to handle an emergency situation. Be prepared to commit to a full day of providing support and please arrive 1-hour prior to walk start time.
Help provide communication between the event coordinator and other key volunteers throughout the course of the event in order facilitate safety and control. Must be able to understand and implement emergency communications procedures, as well as able to operate communications equipment (depending on route, cell phones or HAM radios are used) and must be able to follow a chain of command in communicating information. Arrive 1-hour prior to start time and ensure all communication information is received and equipment is operational. Be prepared to commit to a full day of support.
Traffic & Safety:
Provide assistance to participants at dangerous of confusing intersections along the route, as well as assisting with directing potential parking. Volunteers are stationed at intersections along the route and may assist participants in crossing busy streets; however unless you are a police offer you are NOT PERMITTED to stop traffic. Please commit to a full day of support and arrive half an hour prior to walk check-in time.
Say cheese! Have an eye for capturing those special moments during special occasions? We need volunteers to not only help take our team pictures, but to also capture the days events in its entirety. We will use your images for future marketing materials and will need every minute of the event captured on film - from start, to out on the route, to the rest stop, to the finish line and lunch gathering - we need it all! Must be comfortable taking pictures of people, not shy about getting close-up shots and must have your own digital camera to shoot with at the event. Be prepared to commit to a full day of support and arrive half an hour prior to walk check-in time.
Volunteers will be needed to help assist the event coordinator with any areas that need attention during the event. Must be comfortable working with all types of people, have the ability to move about and possibly lift heavy items, and not shy about receiving an assignment with some direction and then taking charge of what you've been assigned. Be prepared to commit to a full day of support and arrive half an hour prior to walk check-in time, if needed on the day of the event.
When you register online, you will receive the same fundraising tools our walkers enjoy through the Participant Center. And, when you fundraise as a volunteer, you are eligible for the same great prizes available to walkers!
